iOS 27 Update Guide: New Features, Supported iPhones, Siri AI Language Timing and a Pre-Update Checklist

"Should I install iOS 27 now?" A month after release, it's still the most common question. In short, iOS 27 pairs big changes such as Siri AI with fundamentals like faster app launches. If you use Siri in a language other than English, though, know that Siri AI wasn't available in your language on day one.

This guide includes only what appears in Apple Newsroom press releases and Apple Support documents (the iOS 27 release notes). Sources are listed at the end.

iOS 27 at a glance

Supported devices follow ZDNet Korea's report ("iOS 27 is available from iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2"), and Siri AI and Apple Intelligence devices follow Apple Newsroom's availability information.

Key feature 1. Siri AI: a completely new Siri

Apple describes Siri AI as a new version of Siri that "understands personal context, is aware of what's on screen, and can take more actions across apps throughout the system". The main features in Apple's release notes:

• Personal context — finds the information you need in Messages, Mail, Photos and more
• On-screen awareness — ask about what's on screen and act on it directly
• A dedicated Siri app — conversation history syncs via iCloud, so a chat started on iPhone continues on Mac or iPad
• Siri mode in Camera — point at something to get information or take actions such as adding a pass to Wallet
• Writing with Siri — drafts text from a description or polishes what you've written

When do other languages arrive?

Apple Korea's newsroom said "Siri AI is available as a beta in English, with Korean, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish coming in October". So even with iOS 27 installed, Siri AI in those languages needs a separate release. Apple's own announcements are the surest way to confirm the date.

One more thing to know: Apple says features that use server-based models, such as Siri AI, the intelligent photo editing tools and Image Playground, have daily usage limits, and extended use will be offered for a fee in the future. Siri AI isn't available to users under 13.

Key feature 2. Apple Intelligence in Photos, Safari and Shortcuts

Beyond Siri, AI features appear across everyday apps. They work only on Apple Intelligence devices.

Photos

• Spatial Reframing — virtually move the camera position after shooting to recompose
• Extend — naturally fills beyond the photo's edges to straighten, change aspect ratio or add space
• Improved Clean Up — removes larger objects, with a "fast" mode for small blemishes and a "high quality" mode for detailed edits

Safari

• Topic grouping — automatically groups open tabs by similar topic
• Notify Me — checks a web page periodically and alerts you to changes such as price drops or restocks
• Extension from a description — describe in natural language how you want a site to look and it creates a custom extension

Other apps

• Shortcuts — build or edit shortcuts by describing them
• Calendar — describe an event in natural language and it fills in time, place, attendees and title
• Call context in Phone — when calling a business, it surfaces relevant details such as booking numbers or confirmation codes
• Image Playground — generates high-quality images, including a photorealistic style

Key feature 3. Child safety and a new Screen Time

For parents handing a child their first iPhone, these are the most welcome changes.

• New child account setup — start by choosing exactly which apps a child can use
• Ask to Browse — a parent must approve before a child opens a new website in Safari
• Time Allowances — set time for entertainment, games and social media apps in line with age-based guidance
• Scheduling — allow different apps by time of day, and on weekdays versus weekends
• Expanded Communication Safety — steps in when gore or violence is detected in shared images or videos

Key feature 4. Speed, connectivity and design

These improvements apply even on iPhones without AI features.

Apple's footnote says the 30% app-launch figure comes from tests in August 2026 on an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 26.6 and pre-release iOS 27. Results vary by device and usage.

The release notes also include full-resolution sharing in iCloud Shared Albums, personalised EQ for AirPods, perimenopause support in cycle tracking in the Health app, and separate volume for alarms and timers.

Pre-update checklist

Apple Support's "Update your iPhone or iPad" lays out a simple order: back up, connect to power and Wi-Fi, then update. We've added items that matter especially for iOS 27.

1. Check your model — make sure it's iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later. For AI features you need iPhone 15 Pro or later.
2. Back up — to iCloud or a computer. Apple lists this as the first step.
3. Power and Wi-Fi — plug in and connect to Wi-Fi.
4. Storage — if space runs short, iOS temporarily removes apps and reinstalls them automatically after the update. According to an Apple Store footnote, the on-device Apple Intelligence models take about 7GB, so leave plenty of free space if you plan to use AI features.
5. Turn off VPN and proxies — Apple notes that VPN or proxy connections can block access to update servers.
6. Install — go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap "Download and Install" and follow the prompts.

To keep automatic updates on

In Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates, turn on automatic installation, and the iPhone downloads and installs updates overnight while charging on Wi-Fi. You get a notification before it installs.

If the battery drains fast right after updating

Apple says software updates that add features and improvements can affect performance or battery life. Background tasks can continue for a few days after an update, so watch for a few days before drawing conclusions. Which iPhones can install iOS 27?

According to ZDNet Korea, iPhone 11 (2019) and iPhone SE 2nd generation (2020) and later. It's a free update in the Settings app.

Can I use Siri AI in my language right away?

Not at launch. According to Apple, Siri AI arrived first as an English beta, with Korean, French, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish due in October. Siri AI also works only on Apple Intelligence devices such as iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 and later.

Can iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 use the new photo editing features?

Spatial Reframing, Extend and improved Clean Up are Apple Intelligence features, so they work only on the devices Apple lists (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later and so on). System features such as faster app launches, AirDrop and Screen Time improvements apply to every iOS 27 device.

Will updating erase my photos or data?

Apple Support lists a backup as the first step before updating. Back up to iCloud or a computer before you update, just in case.

Is Siri AI free?

It currently comes free with iOS 27, but Apple says server-based features have daily usage limits and extended use will be offered for a fee in the future.
